Colon was not terribly sharp; he gave up 4 runs on 8 hits in 6 innings, but received the run support he needed to garner the victory. In addition, Colon ran his already league-leading strikeout to walk ratio to an astounding 40 to 1. Colon has averaged 7.77 strikeouts per nine innings pitched in 2015, while walking a minuscule 0.19 batters per 9 innings pitched.

Since 1900, Steve Murray says that  just one pitcher in MLB history with enough innings to qualify for the ERA title has walked less than 0.5 batters per nine innings pitched; Carlos Silva, in 2005, walked 0.43 batters per nine. Colon is on track to blow that mark out of the water. This is remarkable, especially when considering that Colon is 42 years old.

In addition to Colon’s amazing walks per nine rate, he has now pitched 40 1/3 consecutive innings without allowing a walk. The franchise record for consecutive innings without a free pass is currently held by Bret Saberhagen, who went 47 innings in a row without walking anyone in 1994. The all-time record for Major League Baseball is 84.1 innings, set in 1962 by Bill Fischer of the Kansas City Athletics.
